Into Thin Air is an account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed journalist and author of Into the Wild. When the storm finally passed, five of them would be dead, and the sixth so horribly frostbitten that his right hand would have to be amputated. The following morning, he learned that six of his fellow climbers hadn't made it back to their camp and were desperately struggling for their lives. Six hours later and 3,000 feet lower, in 70-knot winds and blinding snow, Krakauer collapsed in his tent, freezing, hallucinating from exhaustion and hypoxia, but safe. No one had noticed that the sky had begun to fill with clouds. As he turned to begin his long, dangerous descent from 29,028 feet, twenty other climbers were still pushing doggedly toward the top.

Everest in the early afternoon of May 10, 1996, he hadn't slept in fifty-seven hours and was reeling from oxygen depletion. When Jon Krakauer reached the summit of Mt. Inscribed “For Kate” and signed by the author on half-title. It's a journey that did not begin or end on the mountain, and he is courageous in sharing his whole story with us.Krakauer, Jon Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster (Signed)Īdvance Uncorrected Proofs ( Proof ). If you are looking for a first-person account of the 1996 Everest tragedy, then look no further than Jon Krakauer's excellent "Into Thin Air." What Weathers gives us in "Left for Dead" is a story of survival, not only of the harsh elements, but of overcoming his personal demons. I've read some reviews of this book that express disappointment with the focus of "Left for Dead" being primarily on Beck Weathers' personal story, rather than a recounting of what happened on the mountain. However, the bulk of the book is devoted to Weathers' backstory, including his upbringing, family issues, and battles with depression.

In the initial chapters of "Left for Dead," Weathers summarizes the events leading up to the tragedy and his subsequent, improbable survival. Beck Weathers is one of the climbers who survived (albeit with severe injuries) the 1996 blizzard on Mount Everest that left eight climbers dead.
